I just got enough money to buy the avp-1 but then my friend mentioned that in it order for it to work I need a preamp. Is this true? And if so does a pa system do the deed instead of me having to buy a preamp? I have no knowledge obviously so help me out please. Thanks

Yeah, you'll need a pre-amp for most microphones. Running it through a PA system will be as effective, but make sure you have a pre-fader input on the PA system or you'll hear the non-effected and effected vocals at the same time.
